The conflict of the story is between the protagonist and the society he lives in. Harrison Bergenon has exceptional intelligence, height, strength and beauty and thus has to bear enormous handicaps. The irony is that a social equality is not a good place to live even though they say a lot of nice things about equality. Equality of opportunity has been perverted to equality of outcome. The democratic ideal is that all people are equal. They may be different in many ways, but they all have equal citizenship rights. He wanted to be different, for everyone to be different and have those rights.
