Throughout Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza, there is a recurring theme of keeping the faith. Her faith and loyalty to God ends up playing a huge role in her life. Immaculee’s faith and trust in the idea of God having a plan for her gets her through the start of war all the way to the end. There were many times throughout the book that showed examples of her faith being challenged, but eventually making her into a better person through all the hardships that she had to encounter. While her family was alive, they also helped instill a strong faith life in her while she was growing up.

The first indication of faith playing a role in her salvation that I found in the book was when Immaculee’s father gave her the red and white rosary. Every time the killers entered the house, Immaculee held her rosary tight to her heart in hope that God will protect her and shield the killer's eyes from the bathroom door. While sitting in the bathroom, Immaculee felt very scared and very confused. Immaculee did struggle with temptations coming from the devil within her mind. One specific moment Immaculee greatly struggled with these temptations, yet managed to overcome them was when she got sick in the bathroom. She knew God had a greater plan for her. It also shows how Immaculee had no idea that this was going to be her last dinner with her family and how quickly things can actually change in the blink of an eye. It also shows how even after all of these horrible things had to happen and how her family had to be split apart, she still thanked God for all of the good times she had with her
