Rhetoric in March: Book Three March: Book Three, written by Andrew Aydin, John Lewis, is a graphic novel that illustrates the internal and external struggles of civil rights leaders such as, Martin Luther King Jr., and John Lewis. This graphic novel is loaded with rhetoric that helps elucidate the dedicated efforts of civil rights activists. One example of rhetoric that is prominent within the graphic novel is the use of pathos. The appeal of emotion exemplifies the weight that one had to bear in order to support the civil rights movement.
Across Five Aprils Across Five Aprils is a historical fiction novel written by Irene Hunt. This novel is based around the deadliest battle in United States history, the Civil War. This novel is based around the Creighton family, more importantly based around the nine year old son, Jethro Creighton. As the title states, this novel covers the five Aprils of the Civil war, April 1861 through April 1865.
The graphic memoir, March, is a biography about Congressman John Lewis’ young life in rural Alabama which provides a great insight into lives of black families in 1940s and 50s under Jim Crow and segregation laws. March opens with a violent march at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which the gruesome acts later became known as “Bloody Sunday,” during this march, 600 peaceful civil rights protestors were attacked by the Alabama state troopers for not listening to their commands. The story then goes back and forth depicts Lewis growing up in rural Alabama and President Obama’s inauguration in 2009. This story of a civil rights pioneer, John Lewis, portrays a strong influence between geography, community, and politics. The correlation between these pillars of March is that they have to coexist with other in order for John Lewis to exist that the world knows today.

This book represents those who were discriminated against based on their race and who were put down based on the color of their skin. This fight against discrimination had been happening for many years and thousands of individuals were tired of getting treated differently. The march on Washington was a peaceful protest where more than 250,000 people joined to have their voices heard as stated by Evans. The goal of this march was to create changes within the minority community. Where African Americans in specific had equal-paying jobs, where they would be able to have access to the same places and things as other Americans.
In 1987, PBS started airing a fourteen-hour documentary series on the civil rights movement called Eye on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Movement. The purpose of this series was to inform the public about the civil rights movement from 1954 -1985. In episode six, “The Bridge to Freedom” the series turns it focus onto Selma, Alabama right before the death of Lee Jackson. The documentary which is based on primary sources including both images and interviews of SLCC leaders, SNCC leaders, personal friends of Martin Luther King Jr., supporters of segregation, and television reporters give a broad over view of the events in Selma from a plethora of perspectives.
There are many that would argue that a graphic novel has no place in a classroom because they are too graphic and violent. Some would argue that the content is for children who are too lazy to read a novel full of text. March Book One and Two, are Two of Three of the trilogy written by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, while illustrated by Nate Powell. The Trilogy is about John Lewis life and the Civil rights movement that occurred between the years 1954 and 1968. The Civil Right movement consisted of African-Americans fighting for equal rights.
I'm sure you know about the march on Washington. The march of black rights activists to inspire the government to pass the civil rights act. When you think about the civil rights movement, or the march on Washington, you probably think about Martin Luther King or John Lewis’s speeches. Both famous speeches but how do they compare and contrast? While both Lewis and King use different rhetorical devices both of their speeches are equally effective for their designed use.
Published in The Campus on March 18, 1965, Professor Korn describes his personal journey to support the cause of the civil rights marchers in Selma. He describes how he met other supporters and would band together along the way to Selma. When he reached Selma, he describes how he felt during Reverend James Reeb’s funeral march and the march that took place on March 9, 1965. Lastly, he describes seeing a hate broadcast condemning the Selma marchers as communist. Reflecting the views of the northern goodwill supporter of the Selma voting rights movement, Korn assets researchers in understanding what it was like for outsiders supporting the cause.

This march helped encourage the voting rights act, and to help the civil rights keep moving forward. On August 28, 1963, hundreds of thousands of people marched to support freedom. They marched up and down Constitution and Independence avenues in Washington D.C. before the long awaited speech. They wanted to listen to the dream that Martin Luther King Jr. had, and they wanted to be the people to make that dream real.
