The book Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a book about a thirteen year old “shadow child” named Luke Garner. In a society that only allows no more than two children per family, Luke is an illegal and forbidden child. He stays hidden, alone most of the time until he one day he discovers that there was another shadow child named Jen Talbot, who lived in one of the fancy new houses the government built behind Luke's family’s farm. Luke was forced to stay behind the curtains and wasn't allowed to leave until after the government cut down the forest of his back yard. Luke wanted to live like any other ordinary child and not have to go through his locked up life. Jen tries to make his wish of being free come true and plans to have a rally that will take place over at the president's house. Luke does not have any good feeling about going over to the president's home knowing that there is a 90% chance of Jen losing her life. Although Jen had some hope knowing her mind was set to it. Luke tried his best talking her out of it meanwhile she totally ignored. Getting news about Jack reaching in two days after she had left, had Luke heart broken. The main character Trey is facing terrible hardships trying to go against the population government. He tries to save Luke and his shadow child friends. To escape, the guys made a deal with a resistance member disguised as a guard to rescue a prisoner from another torture camp. The eventually managed to save the group of shadow children. As you can see, there are similar themes to the books above, meanwhile there is more to the theme of never giving up in the book Among the Hidden. This book leaves the reader hanging with many thoughts and ideas as well as having to read more
