Monsters are Due on Maple Street, a horror teleplay written by Rod Sterling, is a perfect example of how fear can make humans into monsters. A screeching noise and a flash of light were heard at the beginning of the play. As a result, panic and fear are infesting Maple Street. When a group develops a "mob mentality," they lose all sense of reason and start looking for scapegoats everywhere.
Along with fear engulfing them, a theory is given, by only a child, that there are aliens. They assume that it is hiding on Maple Street as civilians. They resort to him for answers. Blatantly accusing their former friends and neighbors. The terror of this invasion causes them to resort to extreme measures such as believing their friends to be aliens, determined to overtake planet Earth. Due to their fear of a remote possibility, the peaceful suburban neighborhood is transformed into a vicious horde of monsters. They fall into a spiral out of fear. The people of Maple were so terrified of what was happening that they believed anything. In his garage, Steve has a radio that he built all by himself. They initially believed he was developing an electronic device for aliens. They will eventually all get consumed with the need to find a scapegoat to the point that they will consume one another. They all ruin themselves and one other as a result of their dread and worry. As a result of their worry and scapegoat-seeking, they endanger themselves. No one knows or accepts reality, and everyone is ripped apart. The episode ends with the line, “There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men.” This statement, in my opinion, represents Maple Street people
