Starting over happens all the time. Its called rebirth. Rebirth is when people change or start over, through either a small or large amount of time, and in a way become new versions of themselves. In this storys, there are changes in peoples lives. Rebirth is a theme in this story. Taylor is going through a rebirth in this story. She is one of the main characters in this story. There is evidence throughout the book showing this.There is also evidence throughout the book showing she is going through a rebirth. “When I drove over the Pittman line I made two promises to myself” (Kingsolver pg.15).Taylor has left Kentucky to start a new life. She wants a new life, and thats why she left. She has started her rebirth. Taylor says “So what do you think? I finally asked. Is it ok if we move in?” Taylor has found a place to live, and she has Turtle. She also has a new name. She has a place to call home for the time being. The last part of her re-birth is getting legal parental rights to Turtle. “She’s my legal daughter now.” She has a whole new life. A new name, state, and child. “She put her hands where the child’s shoulders might be, under all that blanket, and pushed it gently back into the seat, trying to make it belong there. She looked at it for a long time. Then she closed the door and walked away” (Kingsolver pg. 25). Turtle has left her old life (not on her own of course) and has started a new life. She is now with Taylor, who has also started a rebirth. “Within a few weeks she was talking again.” This shows even though she went through another rough time in her life, she has made it through again. “She’s my legal daughter now.” Turtle finally has a place with a real family who loves and cares about her.
