“The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas is a powerful book about the way society stereotypes other races. In the Hate U Give, the story follows the main character Starr, who lives in Garden Heights but attends Williamson. Which are two completely different neighbourhoods? These forces start to have internal struggles because she has to struggle with two lives. This also affects star relationships. The reader finds a maverick and starts the most interesting and lastly it shows stars' actions between everything that is going on, this shapes identity and takes justice for everything that happens. Starr has internal struggles throughout the book that shape her identity. This matters because Starr is stuck between two worlds. Her neighbourhood (Garden Heights) and her school (Williamsons). She feels that she needs to change her ghetto personality when she goes to school so she's like the other posh / rich kids. “There are some places where it’s not enough to be me. Starr has many relationships in the book, the hate you give. From friends, boyfriend, siblings, etc. But one of Starr's relationships that stood out to the reader was Starr and her father (Maverick). “Daddy spends hours out here every night, planting, tilling, and talking. He claims a good garden needs a good conviction.” This quote expresses that Starr really listens and observes her father, she pays attention to what Big Mave has to say throughout the book. Maverick also inspires Starr not only as a father figure but as a friend. The reader notices this throughout the book because Starr and Mave tend to spend a lot of time together. Mave inspires Starr mainly about standing up for herself and speaking up for black lives and that is why the reader thinks the relationship stands
