The short story The Last Spin by Evan Hunter is about members of two rival gangs playing Russian roulette. The author uses important techniques, such as metaphor, slang and direct speech, to let me understand that these important techniques made me think that joining a gang is foolish. One Important technique that is used is a metaphor Heart is a metaphor for courage and it's used when Tigo says "You got heart, Dave.”Thats significant because he’s complimenting an enemy. This technique helped me understand that even though they are enemies Tigo is still complimenting him, which shows that even if two or more people are in different gangs they can get along with one another. But joining a gang is more foolish than anything because it just causes so many problems for you later in life. …show more content…

He used slang because this is based in the 1960's. That's how young people in gangs talked. When Dave says “Sometimes I think I'm turkey.” It's important because he's telling the enemy (Tigo) that he's sometimes scared. This technique helped me understand the author's key idea that if these two weren't in different gangs they could be friends and what would have never happened. If Tigo and Dave were to join this gang I'm sure they would have been friends. Its so foolish to join a gang because someone you don't even know is wearing the wrong colour/clothes, they could die at that moment or be brutally beaten. A further technique used by the author is direct speech. He used this form because Tigo and Dave were talking about the gun. When Dave says this “I like a good piece.” Dave’s making friendly conversation and expressing his feelings to this guy that was meant to be his enemy. This important technique helped me understand the author's key idea that they have many things in common like, they both like guns and this is how they start to join gangs.
