One time or another we have all been so caught up in the moment we dont think and say something we later regret. This can lead to repercussions, big or small, but still repercussions nonetheless. In Bryce Courtneay’s novel The Power of One, we follow the main protagonist, Peekay through the ages 5-16 in South Africa- pre-apartheid. During this time, one theme showcased by Bryce Courtenay is, when surrounded by those of excessive judgment one should think logically about how they express their ideas instead of emotionally. One of the main antagonists during Peekay’s time at the school is the Judge. After the break from Holiday, the Judge seems to come back even bigger than before. Not only that, but the Judge wears a new mark on his arm. When seeing these new marks, Peekay forgets about his need to think logically and his regret is almost instant. Evidence: pp 23. As a result of Peekay being unwise about how he expressed his thoughts, the aftermath was negative. He had to learn the hard way that it could’ve all been avoided if he took a step back and thought through how he worded certain things. Although he had to endure mental and physical abuse from his peers and adult figures at the boarding school, it in the end showed him tactics to survive. Such as, when Peekay came to the realization that the Judge was struggling in mathematics and he could use that to his advantage. Despite being scared of the Judge and his reactions, Peekay knows it is smartest to stay calm and under control. Evidence: pp 40. Throughout horrific interactions with others in the boarding school Peekay has to undergo such things someone that young should never have to experience. Whilst Peekays mother is trying to explain how she thought it was best for his nanny to be set loose, Peekay starts to slowly lose control of his emotions. Evidence: pp 151. Peekays emotions got the best of him in this moment and his logical thinking seemed to take the back seat. Regardless that it was his mother, Peekay comes to the realization that even around family members, being vigilant while talking with someone with different views is essential. Amidst staying with his mother, Peekay observes her and determines the best strategies to avoid conflict. Evidence: 160.
