Dosas is a short story within the book Everything Inside. This book highlights beliefs and stories in Caribbean culture. The evolution of a character is shown through many different aspects that can result in positive or negative growth. This particular story involves the positive growth of our main character Elsie, a caretaker who receives a phone call that places her in a very difficult position. By the end of this story, we see the development and buildup of Elsie’s personality and love for herself. Elsie’s overall evolution can be showcased through her conversations with Gaspard, her change in attitude, and her comments and responses. She goes from, “I have five thousand in the bank” (page:16) to “After taking a gulp of rum, she said, ‘I am trained to help people, but for these two, I’d pound both their heads with a big rock until their brains were liquid, like this drink now in my hand” (page 29). Her personality is very giving, and this is shown by her even considering sending her ex money to save his new partner despite how much he hurt her. She willingly sends him $5,000 even though she only had $6,900 in her savings. She was very hard working and caring and this is definitely showcased until she finds out that he had lied to her. She then shifts from being extremely sweet to standing up for herself and realizing that just because you care about someone does not mean that they always reciprocate the care that you offer to them. She was working extremely hard in a job that was all about giving. “What if they take you, too?’ Elsie’s level of concern shocked even her” (page 11), despite just learning that her ex-husband left her for one of her friends, when she spoke to him while he was hurt and in a tough position, she was beyond worried about him. So, her comments throughout the story are adapted to which scenario she w c. as involved in. She goes from pouring almost her entire savings into him, to making comments like, “I’d shave her head,’ she said. ‘I’d shave off that head of hair she gelled so much” (pg:29), as her thought process of revenge begins to cycle. She clearly cares so much for people regardless of how they treat her, and her emotional shift shown within her comments shows how great of a person she truly is for not going after
