On May 13 1988, someone fired without any reason by taking aim through a rifle. Nearly 27 years later birds sing on a quiet morning along a Midtown Sacramento street which has been maintained nicely in the same manner as they did outside an apartment situated on 18th and D street in 1988. It was just before noon on Friday. THe peaceful sounds would be shattered by someone who walked up the stairs leading to second floor apartment. Scenes of how the workers at Blue Diamond and schoolchildren who studied at the nearby Washington Elementary School were taken to safe zone. The police immediately surrounded the building from where the firing had taken place. CBS13 was told by witnesses who saw the shooting that they did not see any sniper but they did see a shadow in the window and had initially thought that it was a backfire. Everybody, however saw what he had left behind. Stephen McDonald, 32 , had been struck by a bullet in the chest. He had taken up a job at Blue Diamond just six weeks previously. He was taking part with his colleagues in a health walk sponsored by employees outside the factory. He and his co-workers were a clear shot away from the shooter. Investigators are of the opinion that it was a random shooting and McDonald was the sole victim was hit. The case remains unsolved nearly three decades later. The shooter was not found inspite of police responding very swiftly. The person however did take care to lock both the door to the apartment building and the window screen. One theory was that since the building was vacant at that time a homeless hangout and a homeless man was being looked at. But the investigation led to nowhere.
