The part of her trauma and why she is the way she is as well as the theme and introduction of the theme will be discussed. The impact the film has on the viewers and the featuring characters will be discussed and also the importance of the film. Including of course a few minor things that were tied in.
Ellen’s trauma was both undiscussed but also discussed in this movie. A lot of it was briefly mentioned, for example her father not being around much or her mother, who when she came out and Ellen was first diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, picked up and left. Obviously the theme of this film is eating disorders and not glamourising them as well as shedding light on the topic. With that being said the main concept is her journey. At the timestamp of 1:20 Ellen is found getting frustrated with a young girl at her former treatment center, who seems to be continuously whining, Ellen then says “there’s no point in blaming everybody… live with it” which is then to make us believe that she has just given up and then finds no hope in getting better, which later we find out is true. Which we will get into later. Once it's time for dinner it is revealed that Ellen is very adamant and good at predicting how many calories are in her food. Which is most likely due to long amounts of times counting and calculating her calories. At the timestamp 3:57 she’s able to exactly say every correct calorie in her dinner, her and her sister have a little joke where they then say she has calories asperger’s, foreshadowing to Luke. The thought behind this for a viewer may be that it is clear she has struggled with anorexia for a while now. A lot of theories have been made on why Marti wrote these scenarios in, but the true reason is yet to be disclosed. In the film, Ellen tends to have very poor coping mechanisms, but even with that, Ellen doesn’t take any bull. Since the start of the movie she is seen to be very direct which is good when it comes to sharing her frustrations in a sense.
