In “Waste Not, Want Not” Bill Mckibben writes about the disaster we humans have created in the environment. Mckibben goes into detail about his examples of the ways we have destroyed the planet. He is an environmental activist, that has created an organization, that organizes hundreds of rallies and has created demonstrations to inform people about climate change, and political change. In this article, Mckibben details how we continue harming the environment, although he makes very good points his way of supporting them is not the correct way to do so. Mckibben begins his essay by informing us about his once-a-year routine, he states “One a year or so, it’s my turn to run recycling day four our tiny town.” (par.1) In the same paragraph, he goes into detail about how and when this routine begins. In the second paragraph, he describes how much trash one small town throws away, he says “Sometimes you have to put a kid into a bin and tell her to jump up and down so the lid can close” (par.2) This gives the reader an image of how bad this small town throws away. But after this sentence, he gives a sentence that doesn’t make any sense, he writes “In a country where almost everyone has access to clean drinking water, they define waste, to begin with. I mean you don’t have a mug?” (par.3) This statement can be taken in many ways, but this is where his statements stop correlating with his claims.
