1. What is the very first of the seven deadly sins that Salieri admits to being guilty of?
Envy. Salieri confesses to Mozart that he is right and they both are poisoned with each other. Salieri says that since Mozart appeared he lived in Hell. Mozart didn’t have to work hard to compose all the pieces he composed and Salieri thought this wasn’t fair and that God was doing this to him. He tells to Mozart: “Whatever I did – you would fill the world! You left me with nothing!"
2. When Salieri first hears Mozart's music ('the solemn Adagio in E-flat"), how does he describe it, musically?
As Salieri describes the music, it started simply by the pulse in the lowest register by bassoons and basset horns – like a rusty squeezebox. The slowness gave it a sort of serenity. Then, there was a single high note on the oboe. Then clarinet joined and sweetened it into a phase of delight. The squeezebox groaned louder, and over it the higher instruments wailed.
