In the story To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, it displays how many racial issues occurred in the southern part of the country during the 1930’s. An example being when Tom Robinson who is a innocent black man who is being accused of assault against Mayella Ewell. At the courthouse, every witness stated that Tom Robinson raped Mayella Ewell on November 21st and punched her in her right eye. But, Tom Robinson can’t use his left arm so there was no possible way that Tom Robinson punched Mayella Ewell. Atticus Finch attempts to prove Tom Robinson’s innocence by using strong, emotional appeals to convince the jury.
Everyone in the courthouse on the night of the trial knew that Tom Robinson was innocent. But at the end of the trial, that didn’t matter. Tom Robinson was a black man, and because of this difference that should not make a difference, he had no say over the family of whites, the Ewells. Tom Robinson was wrongly convicted of raping and beating Mayella Ewell. The evidence of the case leads to the conclusion that Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father was responsible for this misfortune.
Tom Robinson was a colored folk that was charged with a rape case. All this happens from chapter 17 to chapter 25. What happened was that this family named the Ewells blamed this colored man for raping his daughter Mayella Ewell. The story goes like this, one day Tom was passing by the Ewell’s houses and Mayella asked if he could help her chop down something for a nickel. He agreed and after that he didn’t accept the nickel.

After winning the trial with Mayella accusing Tom Robinson, an African American of rape, Mayella’s father, Bob Ewell, believed that he would be viewed as a hero but all he received was “okay, we’ll convict this Negro but get back to your dump.” (Doc.
Mayella accused Tom of rape, which was proven false but the jury decided to choose the voice of a white girl over a black man, which was common during this period of time. The jury then found Tom Robinson guilty, then sentenced Tom to prison. Some may say that Tom Robinson was at fault for entering the Ewell household but Mayella asked tom to come inside, and help her with some tasks which then started the accusations of Tom Raping Maylla Ewell. Tom only helped Mayella because he was black and he wanted to stay on her good side which unfortunately did not happen. Mayella spoke against Tom which caused the jury to find him guilty.
Imagine living in the 1930’s when court systems were biased and innocent men were sent to death. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, we the readers see the trial of a black man, Tom Robinson. We see how this case affects Atticus and his kids, the town of Maycomb, and most importantly Tom Robinson. One step Forward, Two steps Back. When most people think of intense racism, they think of the horrible ways people of color were treated many years ago. Unfortunately, many people think racism is a thing of the past, when this is, in fact, false. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, racism is shown as common practice to many and a monstrosity to very few. Unfortunately, in the small town of Maycomb County, racism wins out as an African American man named Tom Robinson is falsely accused of raping a woman and is sentenced to death.
Tom Robinson is accountable and he is accused of raping and sexually assaulting Mayella Ewell. The characters in the story are some what racist, and some just truly hate black people. Like Atticus
Tom Robinson was accused of the raping of Mayella Ewell. He was in fact innocent, but the fact that he is a black man makes his argument equal to a speck of dust with a racist white jury. He made a big mistake of being kind to her as he was lied on about raping her. All Tom did for Mayella was help with the chores around her house that required a man’s strength. Tom Robinson had the sympathy as a black man to feel sorry for Mayella and he stopped to help her knowing what his consequences could be.

When Mayella, and Bob Ewell, lie to the jury, they do it to make themselves look good. They went out of their way to make an official case about the scenario. Therefore it put Tom Robinson’s own life on trial for something he did not commit. Bob, got to do The only reason Mayella, and what they did, was because of the racial discrimination during that time. Everything that took place in the courtroom shows the loss of childhood innocence and extreme racial prejudice.
Tom Robinson, a black and disabled man, was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. The Ewells were a low status family that were poor and not liked by most of Maycomb. However, during the case, people supported the Ewells just because Tom was not white. It is made obvious in the story that Tom did not commit this crime, but he was convicted due to the color of his skin. During the trial, Tom was treated disrespectfully, and this made even white people start to feel like the whole situation was wrong.
