All over the world there are mother and daughter relationships. Some of the relationships are close and some aren’t so great. Lindo was born and raised in china. When she was young a flood destroyed her house. Her family moves to Wushi, leaving lindo behind with who her matchmaker paired her up with to marry. The family treated her almost as a servant. As she got older she makes enough money and moves herself to America. Shortly after she arrives in America she has a daughter named Waverly, who is them skillful in chess. When Waverly is older she then has a child of her own then a divorce followed. After, Waverly was remarried and before her second honeymoon she expresses to to her mother that she has anxiety about blending in, in China. Lindo finds it funny for her to say that. Waverly believes she will blend in too well. Her mother compares waverly to herself and finds the things she has kept the same. Overall, Lindo expresses how Waverly shouldn’t worry, she will never blend in. In this book, lindo sees her daughter as someone who has changed to be American.
In the Joy Luck Club, waverly is scared she will blend in in china. In the chapter “Double Faced”, Waverly is remarried and she is going on her honeymoon to China. She changes her looks, how she acts, and her lifestyle.
