Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player to ever play the sport because of his dominance, consistency over his career, leadership on teams, championships, and his effect on the sport. Wayne Gretzky is at the top of most scoring and point records in the NHL. He has the most goals in a season at 92 goals and the second most goals in a season at 87 goals. He also holds the record for most points in a season at 215 points, and is in second, third, and fourth place as well at 212, 208, and 205 points in a season. Gretzky not only scored the more goals than anyone else, but he was also able to set his teammates up for success as he earned more points than anyone else as well. Another huge aspect of Gretsky’s skill was his consistency over his 20-season career. Even with being in the top 20 for the highest number of games played, he still managed to have the greatest number of points per game at 1.92 points per game. Not including seasons where he played less than 65 games, he did not have a season under 90 points (besides his last season) which would still put him in the top 10 in today’s NHL. Gretsky was able to put up top 10 figures throughout his entire career, showing his ability to be consistent. Gretsky also carried the Oilers to 4 Stanley Cups, maintaining an average of 2.1 points per game throughout each playoff run.
