What does it mean to be African American? A question almost always asked to the African American population. Due to our history we’ve always had to prove a point or defend ourselves to others whom do not understand the position that was forced upon us. In present society African Americans have struggles just for being a certain ethnicity that we can not control. Therefore, what does it mean to be an African in America? How were the lives of those whom were forced to wear this label effected? Has our true history been for forever? Being an African here in American means to be judged, frowned upon, and disrespected. I’m aware that others may have a different outlook on what it means to be an African in America, yet I intend to be completely honest with my opinion. Many of us African American are judged as one due to others action. For example, some African American who take matters of society against African Americans into their own hands, but handle it violently and unorderly. Originally, as we all know, our “African American” roots are not from America. We were forced to live in a country to be used and mistreated. Forced to believe what slave masters forced upon us, they changed our names and beliefs, so they could have ultimate control. If things would have been different, such as slavery not existing African Americans would not have had to go through all the traumatizing events that happened in the past and carried on to present day. Most African Americans do not know we come from royalty and powerful Africans, but we were taken from what was ours. We are scarred for life and others cannot understand how the label and history has affected the “African American”
