Imagination is a light on a road that would normally be dark. It is a portal to a new universe that normally would be shut. And it is something that can be used so easily to form great works of literature off a single idea. Richard Connell uses his imagination and ours, to create a short story that is so enticing, and so captivating, that it tangles the mind of the reader into a web of suspense that can only by escaped by flipping to the next page. The way Connell holds this suspense and thrill in The Most Dangerous Game is by putting a likeable character into multiple situations of tension. Now everyone loves a good bad guy, but a good guy is far more respected an adored by the reader. Well, what makes a good guy? Author Dennis Prager reveals what a good guy is quite nicely, "Goodness is about character - integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage, and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat other people". In Connells story, our main character Rainsford chooses to take the moral path, rather than fall into the evil General Zaroff's convoluted reality. Another example of his likeable character and will to conserve his standards is right before the hunt begins. Since he is not willing to hunt humans, the general decides that he will hunt Rainsford! The only rule is that if he survives for more than three days, and beat the general's challenge, he is not aloud to tell any one about the island and what happened there. To this Raindsford responds, "'I will agree to nothing of the kind'" (6). This again shows Rainsfords abundance of character and hero like morals that make a very likeable
