When one is described as “rich,” he or she is assumed to exhibit many distinctive qualities: a plethora of wealth, a beautiful home, a luxurious car, and in most cases a tendency to spend his or her wealth on personal possessions. Tobias Wolff’s short story, “The Rich Brother,” boldly presents the aforementioned word in the title of the poem, displaying it to readers before they even begin to read the story. The story recounts the experiences of two brothers, and readers could at first conclude that either brother is the “rich” brother; however, this word can undertake either a positive connotation or a negative connotation, depending on the perspective. The short story, “The Rich Brother” accounts the journey of two brothers with great different personalities. After Donald, the younger naive religious brother, is kicked out of a communal farm, Pete, the older wealthier brother, goes to pick him up. Pete feels that Donald is too carefree, and that he always has to help him out of his mistakes. The tensions between these siblings are evident--they both feel that they need to prove themselves to each other; they need to provide evidence of their “prosperity” (Wolff 324). Pete more than Donald tends to always try to impress others, such as buying expressive items.
Many people believe that to be rich one has to have money, but there are many different ways to be wealthy. Humans can be considered to be rich when they have money and objects that other people would also like to have. However, some people are rich with experiences, knowledge, or religion and do not have cars or homes of monetary value. Ernest E. Larkin uses his article “Christian Mindfulness” to show how mindfulness, when used correctly, is able to address spiritual hunger and will lead Christians to become intimate with God. However, I have found that many Christians today reject the idea of mindfulness because of its development in Buddhism. Buddhist will teach mindfulness in a way that eternal enlightenment can be found through self-awareness alone and not through God. While I agree that Christians should stay away from the type of mindfulness practiced in eastern cultures, I fully support Ernest E. Larkin’s idea of tweaking mindfulness so that one can become closer to God and the Holy Spirit.

His brief answers to the questions asked by Fleming in 4-7 show that either he is nervous about saying the wrong thing or is just not in the mood to talk and that he would rather that the other boys leave him alone and not try to engage him in conversation. Whenever someone is eager to avoid conversation they tend to make responces short and terse as apposed to long and expressive. Another clue that reveals that Stephen is not eager to talk is that he responds "I don 't know," to the first question that was asked by Fleming.

This was a time, with the rise of Darwinism, when science started overpowering religion, and the literature reflected a sort of mourning over the figurative death of god, resulting in a style of compensatory writing. The years after World War I spurred works that exposed the traditional world and the assumptions thereof. Features such as less socially prominent characters, more emphasis on experienced and subjective time, and a change in symbolic setting, characterized some of modernist literature. In James Joyce’s short story “The Dead”, themes of death, rebirth, the past and future are explored.
Over the course of this winter quarter, I have learned in my class of Psychology of Wellness how to incorporate mindfulness into my daily life. The definition of mindfulness is considered an art. In the book of the Fully Present, the authors Susan Smalley and Diana Winston transmitted their wisdom on how to learn, practice and cultivate this art. According to the mentioned authors, they defined mindfulness as “the art of observing your physical, emotional, and mental experiences with deliberate, open, and curious attention” (2010, p.78). This definition shared by the authors is simple, but it communicates what are the characteristics that an individual needs to consider when it comes to being mindful.
