Jonathan, I agree with your statement we do tend to view the New Testament through the lens of our twenty-first-century culture. Even though we know that it's not the best way to interpret the New Testament we seem to get a better grasp from doing this. I like how you brought up the original authors of the New Testament and how they wrote through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Yes, it is difficult to fit in someone else's shoes, but the Holy Spirit that existed when scripture was penned can lead, guide and direct our path today just as it did then. I would agree with you that the three methods that the authors bring forth are a great way to view the New Testament.
I enjoyed very much all the good points mentioned in your discussion board regarding the Bible. I do believe that, it is important to learn the history, meaning and behind God’s plan for the Bible in our regular day lives. In the meantime, I would like to highlight the fact that, nevertheless, the Bible is all God’s Word, but, it is also good, in order to better appreciate, that Christians study other scriptures such as Old and New Testament, Gospel, the Psalms, Proverbs, Wisdom, and so forth. According to Faber, “This book [Bible] can go under the microscope. You’d find life under the glass, streaming past in infinite profusion”(Bradbury 79). In the Bible there is an infinite amount of knowledge. This knowledge goes past anybodies wisdom, if the society used books they would be able to use the advice of the wise people from the past. Bradbury compares life and books because life is so difficult that nobody can understand it.
I am an avid reader and reading has been my favorite hobby for a great deal of my life. When I am reading a book, I don 't just glance at the words, I dive into the world that the pages describe. Unfortunately, when I do this I render myself oblivious to my surroundings, such as people attempting to talk to me and the current time. The latter of which has resulted in me missing various types of deadlines, such as arriving somewhere late or going to sleep at an absurd hour in the early morning.
A biblical worldview will effect everything I do in my life. One of the most important things is the way we treat and interact with others. It start with the way we think about others, if we know them or not we should see them through the eye of compassion. We must be careful not to judge people because of what we know or don 't know about them. How you speak and treat them will determine if you will ever be able to help them or not.
The memorization of every single book and every single chapter for the passing down for future generations would be a strenuous task. If I had to pick a single book in which to spend my time learning, I would pick the book of Psalms. The Bible is saturated with knowledge and we are able to understand what it means. We have a duty to study the Bible in its entirety, meaning we have no right to leave nothing out in our studies of the Bible. As we dive into the prosperous word of God we should approach it with an open heart and an eagerness to learn all we can from it. The Old testament is treated like Revelation at times. We feel as if it’s not needed to study those books of the Bible in our lives.
One detail that I specifically remember is watching myself arguing about the definition of a coniferous tree, although the definition of a coniferous tree doesn 't matter, I was arguing just for the sake of arguing. As mentioned in my previous “TBR” post, my eyes begin to struggle when I read a considerable amount, even with my glasses on, it can be a pain. Sadly, as I was three quarters of the way through The Perks of being a Wallflower, my eyes began to play up. As a result, this made reading difficult and led to me taking an “extended break”.
I would start by saying that I am sorry that my friend feels this way. The Bible is God’s story and His plan for us to live our lives Holy and successfully. We are to see that the Bible is a book that has certainties that can and will help our lives daily. Many times, especially at Bible College it gets monotonous and even robotic to say that Jesus is the reason why we have peace with the Father as it is said many times and loses its meaning.
