San Joaquin Delta College Woman in Combat What obstacles might a female soldier face in the military? One might not think about what female soldiers endure in the military. Female soldiers undergo sexual harassment, inequality issues, and social intimidation. The military today is not supportive and caring of our female soldiers. There are many benefits that allowing more women into the military and in combat positions can achieve. These benefits include, but are not limited to, controlling sexual harassment, group intelligence, filling the gender gap, and making the military an actual meritocracy. This is a problem that has been continuing on for a long time and is out of control. Anu Bhagwati (2013) writer for The Washington Post and of the article “Why the Military Needs to Recruit and Promote More Women,” says that when she was in the Marines “…some officers and senior enlisted personnel in [her] units were sexually assaulting and harassing dozens of junior troops.” In the article she goes on to talk about how commanding officers and leadership do nothing to help and don’t even care about the issue. Officers are constantly getting away with sexual harassment without a single consequence. If more women were able to advance to higher positions, then leadership will actually care about the sexual harassment issue and be able to properly address it. The military doesn’t realize the talent it loses every year due to sexual harassment from women who have shown their integrity on the battlefield and have left without any opportunities to benefit from their combat experience. These women could be important assets to our national security as well as help control the issue of sexual harassment in the
