The men have a firm stand towards their tradition and stay faithful to their friendship by trusting each other. When one committed evil acts, they would punish the man while managing to forgive him. Through the allegiance and faithfulness in their friendship, the men successfully formed an ideal community where they feel safe and comfortable while relying on each other.

A lot was unknown about Daniel due to the fact that his mother was not in his life, and therefore a lot is revealed about his life and family in this chapter. This specific passage displays some of the emotions that were in play due to the nervousness and shock of meeting his mother.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho portrays a young boy pursuing his Personal Legend. Everyone has a Personal Legend which is what a person has always wanted to accomplish but as time goes on people start to believe that their dreams are impossible. This novel describes the journey that the boy, Santiago, goes on to realize his Personal Legend. Paulo Coelho uses characters such as the miner, the thief, Fatima, and the alchemist to demonstrate the theme that pursuing one’s Personal Legend isn’t about the treasure found at the end, but the journey made and the obstacles that were overcome.
Amy Tan’s Mother Tongue is a reflective essay she recounts of her experience growing up as Chinese-American living with her immigrant mother in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her internal struggle for social acceptance by learning Standard American English through academic acquisition in comparison to the shame of her mother tongue which she saw as socially restrictive and depriving of her confidence to embrace her cultural heritage. Tan’s reconciles her internal conflict by accepting that English is a sophisticated form of communication in which all variations or dialects can teach us language sensitivity and maybe creatively enabling.
Santiago has an epiphany when he realizes that if you never change and take risks you will never move forward. He wants to find his “personal legend,” or true desire, and to obtain this he needs to change his own nature. He must be willing to give up whatever is necessary to achieve this goal, including freedom. On Santiago’s journey he becomes employed by a crystal merchant that never achieved his personal legend. The merchant resisted change and never accomplished his dreams.
