Introduction Bullying has become a serious problem for many children in primary school. This cycle of violence is breakable once the issues are properly identified, but there is a lot more to it than just stopping the bully. “We need to examine why and how a child becomes a bully or a target of a bully…Bullying is a learned behaviour. If it can be learned, then it can be evaluated, and then changed.” (Coloroso, 2003) My aim is to find out how safe primary school learners feel, the effects and role each person has on a bullying situation, and what can be done in order to get rid of these types of bad behaviours from the school environment so that everyone can feel safe and comfortable. Research Questions The literature review addresses the following research questions. 1. How and why does a child become a bully? 2. What are bullying behaviours at a primary school level? 3. What is the impact of the three roles in a bullying situation? 4. How can we prevent or eliminate bullying situations in our schools? Definition of Terms Bullying: The student is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other students. (Olweus, 1993) The Bully: Is a person who uses strength or influence to harm or intimidate those who are weaker. (Oxford, 2015) The Victim: Is someone that has been targeted and singled out by a bully to be the object of mockery and is victim to verbal, physical, or relational aggression, merely because he or she was different in some way. It is also to build on your knowledge in preventing these behaviours and improve the learners, school and classroom environment. This literature review shows you the importance of each of the roles in a bullying situation. It teaches you how to deal with these situations, become aware of, prevent and intervene. Teachers, adults and witnesses can do something to stop this cycle of violence from progressing and hopefully end it altogether.
