Digestion is the breakdown of food into absorbable and essential molecules and the eliminatation of the waste material, therefore its malfunction is compromising for whole boby. The digestive system or tract includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine or colon and rectum, and the end is the anus. The entire system is about 9 meters long. The salivary glands in the mouth, contains an enzyme, amylase, which breaks down starch. Teeth, which are part of the skeletal system, play a key role in digestion.
Swallowing pushes down chewed food, passing through the oropharynx and hypopharynx, into the esophagus; muscular contractions called peristalsis transports food through the rest of the system. The stomach’s gastric juice, which is primarily hydrochloric acid …show more content…

Gut also has to get rid of all the toxins produced by metabolism, which liver releases into bile.
Mouth
The health of the mouth especially teeth, which are the hardest part of body, lips, and tongue is crucial. Lips, tongue and teeth help the formation of words by controlling air flow out of the mouth and making certain sounds. With chewing or mastication we tear, cut, and grind food in preparation for swallowing. Chewing allows released enzymes of the mouth, to further digestion.
Oral hygiene could consider avoiding bacteria, viruses, tooth decays caused mostly by caries, also taking care of gums or avoiding and preventing other infections. Some bacteria cause gingivitis or gum disease, these bacteria produce toxins and gums react to these with swelling and bleeding; if left untreated, leads to peridontal disease and tooth loss.
