The novel, Ivan journey in the Russian revolution was influenced with power and authority. Social issues played an important role. We see Ivan as a middle class individual, but in reality, as the author emphasized, it seems he was miserable being a part of the middle class. He was not very influential because he did not make much money, however, he was still ambitious and materialistic and had dreams of becoming wealthy. The pleasures he found were connected with his work. These were pleasures of ambition; his social pleasures were those of vanity; but Ivan Ilych's greatest pleasure was playing bridge. “He acknowledged that whatever disagreeable incident happened in his life, the pleasure that beamed like a ray of light above everything else was to sit down to bridge with good players”.
