The narrative embroidery that tells of the Norman invasion of England refers to scenes and individuals but gives little more information than the images. Many wonder if the inscriptions were an afterthought- a theory that could well be supported by the awkward placement, careless squeezing and inconsistent abbreviations. Where space was needed, as in the height of the Battle of Hastings, the inscriptions were disposed of altogether. The soldiers, animals and weapons take up most of the space and actually break the register at times. Undoubtedly, the inscriptions would have been a source of surprising flattery for anyone who could identify himself on the tapestry, praising the elite pictured.

In a world where danger lies around every corner one must either live in constant fear or defeat the fear entirely. The Anglo-Saxons did neither. Every morning just walking out of their halls may prove dangerous, mostly for reasons unknown to them. Nature to them was an enigma, only to be explained by mystic gods and goddesses that used their powers for good or evil. To the Anglo-Saxons even explanations conjured proved, without a doubt no control was granted to anyone.

The subject of King Arthur is one of the most popular of all time and his stories have been retold in nearly every form of media. In fact, some would argue that Arthurian legend is “part of our cultural currency” because “despite its aristocratic and theological genesis, the Matter of Arthur has irrevocably embedded itself in modern British and American culture” (Sklar 5-10). Because today's western countries practice a fusion of Christian and Pagan traditions, today's people find comfort and familiarity in Arthurian legends. We can relate to and even value the Christian ideals that they live by. Yet, we also find ourselves fascinated by the magical aspects that are included in his story.
My family is middle class. I did not quite have the extraordinary up bringing that prince William did with his endless opportunities, but my parents always paid the bills on time, many family vacations (within the states) and there was always enough for on the table. I believe Prince William was very brave to go against his culture by marrying a common girl, and gives me hope that everyone one day will have the opportunity to marry
The epic poem “Beowulf”, translated by Burton Raffel, focuses on a hero by the name of Beowulf who goes on a quest to rescue King Hrothgar and his people from an egregious monster by the name of Grendel. This Anglo-Saxon tale gives insight into the values and beliefs of the people from whom the story originated. While warfare was a focal point in their lifestyle, it was far from a savage, barbaric state of fighting. Honor and prestige were bestowed upon those who died during battle and selflessness for fellow warriors was a fundamental belief.
