A man who always followed controversy – German writer Friedrich Nietzsche was and still is one of the greatest, most interesting, and influential European philosophers to ever exist. During his life, his work was not appreciated as much as it is today. A part of the reason why his work was so undervalued was because of how difficult it was to comprehend his writing. As brilliant as he may have been, Nietzsche did have moments when he just seemed to be talking nonsense, he was sometimes contradicting himself, and his wide vocabulary made it difficult to read. But by 1889, Nietzsche’s productive life came to an end after a complete mental and physical breakdown. It should be noted though that during his time served in the military he suffered from chest pain, constant migraines and eye trouble, which could have ultimately played as major factors in his collapse.9 This breakdown basically left Nietzsche in a broken state and under the care of his sister Elisabeth. Unlike Nietzsche, she had no interest in philosophy, and had views completely opposite views of her brother’s. “He was an atheist who was disgusted by anti-Semitism; she was a devout Christian who married a leading anti-Semite, Bernard Forster.”10 While Elisabeth and Forster were spending time in Paraguay, a few months after he committed suicide, forcing Elisabeth to take over the affairs of the colony for her husband. Shortly after she returned to Germany, she had to fight for the custody of her brother and all of his unpublished work including letters he had sent to others. After winning the custody of him, the Nietzsche’s mother had died in 1897. Elisabeth and Friedrich then had to move to Weimar, where she already had a Nietzsche archive in preparation for his biography. Friedrich died a few years later in Weimar on August, 25th, 1900 from
