The three female U.S. athletes that I am going to talk about is Babe Didrickson Zaharias, Bille Jean King, and Peggy Fleming. All three of these athletes were have been apart of the USA Olympic game, and have made a huge impact on women playing sports.
Peggy Fleming was an American figure skater and earned five U.S. titles and three world titles. She is most famous for winning the gold medal when she attended the 1968 Winter Olympic Games. During the Winter Olympic game she was the only athlete that got a gold medal that year. It was very important that Peggy one a gold medal that year, because in 1961 the entire eighteen members of the U.S. figure skating team and coach was killed in a plane crashed on the way to the World Figure Skating Championship. People believe that Peggy was one of keys to rebuilding the U.S.skating team, and with her winning that gold metal marked the U.S. return to dominance in that sport after a tragedy. As a professional she was ranked the number one female tennis play in the world for a number of years in 1970’s. She was a prominent advocate for gay’s and women’s right, and she also was listed in life magazine for “100 most important Americans of the 20th Century.” Bille a huge impact in the world by pushing for equal prize money for women, and as she was one of the first well-known openly gay athletes. Bille faced many issues with being open about her sexuality. Her family even told her that one point in her life that she should act more “ladylike”.
