The 1930’s were a very tragic time for many European nations. The Great Depression was in full swing at the time and the economy of many countries suffered greatly. The German people were suffering the most at this time because they were forced to pay back damages after signing the treaty of Versailles. When Hitler came into power he was able to turn around the economy. Hitler was a compelling political figure and he promised a better future for Germans. This made many people in other countries want to support him. They thought that he was a kind of messiah because of all the great things he did for the people. They thought he must have been doing something right if he was able to get their economy rolling again. He was a powerful figure whose ideas of a better Germany appealed to the German people. Following World War 1 the British were tired from the war. They were in a weakened state. This vulnerable state was the reason that the British government believed that appeasement was the best course of action towards the German Nazi. Daily life was very difficult. They needed lots of money to pay for things like bread. Their frustration would eventually turn to anger, and it is what set the stage for Hitler’s rise to power. The German people were so desperate to make a change in their lives they were willing to do anything to get back on their feet. The treaty, that was supposed to bring a long lasting peace, ended up only stalling for a much larger and grander war then the first world war and was seen as the torch that ignited the beginning of the Second World War.
