Cause(s) of WWI Over many decades, there have been thousands and almost millions of reasons for what caused World War 1. Some say it was the only assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary or the European expansion alone. Furthermore, there is not just one factor that led to the cause of World War 1, yet possibly three. In simple terms, the causes of World War 1 are militarism, nationalism, and alliances.
During the years that led up to World War 1, many factors took place that potentially caused the war to occur, especially in the continent of Europe. In the Balkan peninsula, a belief called nationalism caused lots of chaos and tension between the nations (OI). Prideful Balkan countries would battle amongst themselves to prove their dominance as a culture. On top of this, countries formed alliances, creating an intricate alliance system that stretched throughout most of 20th century Europe
Many factors played into the start of World War I like nationalism, the arms race, the lack of balance of power, Sebians assassinating the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, and alliances, but there is one big cause you can argue that started the war. Tension between and within countries caused leaders of the countries and groups to spark rebellions of the groups, and one thing after another a World War was on their hands. Germany's tensions between France and Russia started alliances. Serbia had sparked the first rebellion by trying to gain independence from the mother country Austria. Europe was thought to be in a strong position, but at the end of 1918 the position was reduced.
War broke out in 1914 due to forces that had been building up in Europe for years. While the Allies blamed Germany for the war too harshly, its actions certainly did directly contribute to World War I, as did those of Austria Hungary. However, each country involved fostered militarism in their country, and became in entrenched in the web of alliances and race for imperial power, all causes of the environment that led to the Great War. Therefore, it could be said that all European countries were responsible, in part, for World War I, as reflected in Documents 5, 6, and 7.
The underlying causes of the World War I were militarism, nationalism, and imperialism. Militarism, the glorification of the military, was one of the major causes of World war I. People thought that the military was important to civilians and should be respected and glorified. It was an arms race. The more one nation built its militaries, the more the other nations felt that they had to do the same. World War I was caused by the flawed alliance system between the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria, and Italy) and the Triple Entente (Britain, France, and Russia). The people’s nationalistic feelings fueled the war because they did not want their country’s image ruined. In Europe, the nations had an uneven division of colonies which caused a desire to weaken other countries through a world war.
Underlying Cause of WWI The war had numerous claimed reasons for the cause of World War 1. People claimed these three reasons, Militarism, Alliances, and Imperialism for having created this extensive conflict. Multiple individuals have declared that Militarism, Alliances, and Imperialism were the foremost options people viewed as the dispute cause.

Because of the graph, you can see that over the year many countries have gained more military which means that other countries have to up their game in militarism. Nationalism and militarism caused a global war because when it comes to having a strong military then everyone else is going to have a strong military because you do not want to be the weakest link. Nationalism is also going to tie in with this because the people that what their country to become a strong country are going to help out with the military because they want the best for their country.

Therefore the Industrial Revolution benefited Europe tremendously giving them new machinery, technology, and production on a larger scale.
