During the late 1800’s there was a scramble for imperialism. The United States felt that it needed to be more powerful, and to show its relevancy in the big picture of the entire world. Basically, the U.S. wanted to be taken seriously, and a possible way of doing that was imperialism (which also happens to be a very controversial course of action).
