What wavelength of light is the best for solar power production? What wavelength of light is the best for solar power production? Most people think solar panels are really complicated but they aren’t . The light from the sun can be different colors depending on the wavelength. Most solar panels are not very efficient. The thing used the most in solar panels is silicon. If the wavelength of light is 495-570 nm then more electricity will be generated than other wavelengths The way solar panels work isn’t as complicated as most people think. As the sunlight hits the silicon photons transfer their energy to electrons knocking them loose. This causes the electrons to separate from the atoms and get absorbed. They are then transported by an electrical imbalance in the cell acting like a hill to water. The imbalance is created by N-type (Negative) and P-type (Positive) silicons. The N-type has extra electrons and the P-type is missing electrons so electrons jump from the N-type to the P-type silicon. Since silicon is a semiconductor it can keep the imbalance in the cell, and …show more content…

Semiconductors are used to keep an imbalance in the cell if a conductor was used instead, it would not keep the imbalance. The solar panel is colored so that it is the darkest possible color so that it absorbs a lot of light. The team from University of Michigan is coloring it differently, but it only absorbs 1/3 the light. Wiring leads are used to direct energy from the solar panel to power something. Plexiglass can cover the panel to protect it from the weather, but tempered glass is safer because glass won’t have imperfections that refract light and build up. That could eventually lead to fire. Some solar panels can be blue, but solar panels can be black too, those are both good colors for absorbing light. Solar panels have metal contacts on both sides of the cell to draw the electrons out. Solar panels normally have 60 cells but some have
