The oppression of slaves throughout the union was depressing and horrific. Slaves were not well fed nor given an appropriate shelter like their masters did. During this era, many colored people suffered to much pain and in order to ease their pain and gain their freedom they began to revolt. One great example of rebellion is Nat Turner’s of Virginia. Turner was born in Southampton, Virginia. He grew up in Benjamin Turners plantation as a slave and had the benefit to learn how to read and write at a young age. While he works on plantations, he also was a fiery preacher of slaves on the plantation. He used to claim that he was sent by god to lead slaves to their freedom. His religion and belief would eventually convince him that its time to fight for freedom. It highlighted that the rebels were going to go as far as killing anyone regardless of age or gender to achieve their freedom. The most interesting part about this incident is that Turner only killed one person who was a white woman, he beat her over the head with a fence post. He believed that the only way the Anglo-Americans were going to understand the sufferings of slaves was if they have been treated the same way as slaves, which was beatings, killings and lynching. Nat Turners rebellion put out an alert to white people throughout the state. Whites feared for their lives and started to build a militia after the massacre of 60 white people. In response to that, the militia killed 120 black people, most of whom were innocent. The victims of the militias did not even participate in the rebellion. After that, the rebels eventually got caught and some were killed, some were tried in court and the rest were sold out of state.
