World War II provoked the start of the Holocaust and the large-scale murder of innocent Jews. The Nazis, led by Adolf Hitler, drove an immense number of families out of their homes, causing them to starve and suffer. Hitler turned countless people against the Jews after blaming them to disguise his failure in losing World War I. Hitler was humiliated and out for vengeance, so he invaded Poland to kick off the start of World War II. Many people disagreed and formed plans to assassinate Hitler, but the Nazis' power was too strong. The Holocaust opened many eyes to the corrupted German society. Although numerous people tried to help, WW2 and the Holocaust occurred in the same period, risking millions of lives.

Irena Sendler was a Polish social worker who helped save as many Jewish people as she could, which were mainly children. She was in charge of “The Children's Division of Zegota,” an underground group that assisted Jewish children. “Irena and her helpers made over 3,000 false documents to help Jewish families before she joined Zegota and the children’s division” (Facts about Irena). Irena also smuggled children out of courthouses from the Warsaw Ghetto and saved over two thousand children. “During the remaining years of the war, she lived hidden, just like the children she rescued. Irena was the only one who knew where the children were to be found. When the war was finally over, she dug up the bottles and began the job of finding the children and trying to find a living parent” (Facts about Irena). After the war, she would go out and find the children, along with their parents, to make sure they reunited safely. Irena dedicated her life to helping innocent Jews in need. Even though she was eventually caught and arrested, it did not stop her from “feeling liberated”. She was an idol and hero to many Jews during the WW2 and
