In the film “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993) directed by Lasse Hallstrom, there are many elements of film that have been included to help form a better environment or emotion in the scenes. The elements are very important in the scene where Gilbert hits Arnie to show the development of Gilbert and Arnie’s relationship. The different camera angles show the powers switched between Arnie and Gilbert. Lighting will set the mood for the scene, dialogue helps to understand the hidden motifs behind this scene.
Lighting in this scene is very important as it sets the mood. Lighting is a tool used in a film to help emphasize how you should feel about a certain character or storyline. For example in the film when Gilbert is chasing Arnie around for eating the cake he bought from Foodland, which he did not want to do. He chases him up to the bathroom repeatedly trying to make him have a bath until he loses it and starts hitting him. There is very low lighting showing the fact that this is a change in mood between Arnie and Gilbert, they are usually having fun when Gilbert is chasing him around but not this time. He can't stand the thought that he had just hurt his brother, the one he was always supposed to protect. He is just passing the Leaving Endora sign, and the road is lit up like the light at the end of the tunnel. If he leaves he will be able to do everything he wants to do. He is sat in his car contemplating his choice, everything is dark around him apart from his face which seems like its lit up from the road to leave Endora, like it is taunting him that this is the better choice. This makes us feel like he is going to leave his family and never come back. He ends up turning back because he knows he could never leave his family in
