In the play “Hamlet,”written by Shakespeare, we follow the main character Hamlet, and his journey of revenge. After the play was over, it leaves the question, did Hamlet get his revenge. The question also becomes, was Hamlet's revenge worth it. Did Hamlet sacrifice too much to achieve his goal? Hamlet did get his revenge at the end of the play, but did his revenge outweigh the losses that had to come with it. Hamlet completes his revenge by killing King Hamlet at the end of the play. In the last scene of the play Hamlet kills his step father King Hamlet fulfilling his revenge. In the final fight scene Hamlet has gone off the edge while killing the King. As Hamlet is dying he says, “which have solicited- the rest is silence,” (Act 5. Scene 2: 395). Hamlet has gone to a place of peace after the death of the king. This shows how Hamlet has fulfilled his revenge and has nothing more to fight for. Hamlet dies peacefully knowing that King Hamlet is no more. Hamlet did achieve his revenge, but did he lose too much? Hamlet lost friends, his mother, and his own life in the process. Hamlet's last words to his mother where, “O villainy! Ho! Let the door be locked,” (Act 5. Scene 2: 342). Hamlet is in great sorrow watching his mother die before him. Hamlet's mother was his most loved person, so watching her die was most definitely his last straw. Hamlet brings up his mother another time after her passing when he is killing King Hamlet. Forcing the King to drink from the poison cup, he says, “follow my mother,” (Act 5. Scene 2: 358). Hamlet releases that his mothers death was the cause of King Hamlet's evil plot to kill him. So, he kills King Hamlet to avenge his loved mothers death.
