Hamlet is one of the most quoted and memorable of William Shakespeare’s plays. In Hamlet, Hamlet learns that his father, King of Denmark, was murdered by his own brother, Hamlets uncle. Hamlets father was killed before he could confess leaving him in purgatory, which means that he is left to roam the Earth, going to neither Heaven or Hell. Hamlet is so enraged he tells his father he would avenge his death so that his father will be free from purgatory;however, Hamlet has run into some obstacles. Hamlet first has to make sure that his uncle is the real killer, Hamlet doesn't know whether to trust his fathers ghost and Hamlet doesn't want to kill anyone. In Elizabethan time when this play was written ghosts were often said to be the devil. The devil is said to be able to take on any shape. When Hamlet see his fathers ghost he is unable to tell whether it really is his dad or the devil. It is said that the devil would tell people to do terrible things so when Hamlets dad asks Hamlet to kill his uncle he becomes a little suspicious. Nonetheless Hamlet still plans on murdering his uncle to free his father from purgatory. Hamlets loss hits him harder than it does anyone else in his family especially his mother who married her late husbands brother. Hamlet sees this quick marriage as a betrayal of his father. Hamlet explains his feelings on the quick marriage as this “ Ere yet the salt of most unrighteous tears/Had left the flushing in her galled eyes,/She married. O most wicked speed, to post/With such dexterity to incestuous sheets!” Hamlet hated his uncle not only for taking his mother away, or taking his thrown, but most importantly for killing his father.
