Staying happy is a difficult thing for many Americans but all it takes is some time with family or friends every day. The Indians show this in the story When Grizzlies Walked Upright by Richard Erdoes and Alfonso Ortiz tell past stories of adventure and dance by the fire with their loved ones. Like the Indians, I find adventure and happiness by spending time with friends and family. People are happier when they gather in celebration or learn from stories of great adventure. To the Indian people, happiness comes from an elder telling an ancient myth of adventure. “Pleased with what he’d done, the Chief of the Sky Spirits decided to bring his family down and live on earth himself” (Erdoes and Ortiz 24). The Chief of the Sky Spirits is happy because he creates the world by himself. To celebrate, he takes his family to earth so he can witness his work in action. The Chief of the Sky Spirits is happy when he celebrates his achievement with his family. Matching the daughter of the Chief of the Sky Spirits, I am happy when I am celebrating with others. “The little red-haired girl and the cubs ate together, played together, and grew up together” (Erdoes and Ortiz 26). This makes the daughter happy because she can party with her new friends instead of being with her strict father. The daughter of the Chief of the Sky Spirits and I both are happy when we have friends with whom we can celebrate. Corresponding to the daughter of the Chief of the Sky Spirits, Americans are happier when they have people around to keep them company. The author describes how the grizzlies are appreciative of the daughter: “All the grizzly bears throughout the forests were so proud of these new creatures that they made a lodge for the red-haired mother and her children” (Erdoes and Ortiz 26).
