In Sophocles’ Antigone, the protagonist, Antigone, possesses the characteristic flaw of blind passion. Antigone tells the tragedy of a recalcitrant woman’s agony due to a new edict declared by the ruling power of the state, King Creon. The young woman, Antigone, wants to bury her brother, Polynices, but Creon’s edict announces that anyone who does so will be punished in death. Antigone rebels against the law of the state because she is assertive in her decision to bury her brother in order to honour the gods and maintain family loyalty. She courageously decides to act upon her free will and is prepared to face the consequence of death that proceeds.

Her small role only played the part to show how fragile a person can be when exposed to the chaos that disobedience can bring. Especially after she implied that she could handle whatever news the messenger could throw at her (I, whom you speak to, have known grief before (pg. 40, 21)), her resolve to end her life is significant in that Antigone’s disloyalty can affect even those that did not play a major role in the government. The princess of Rohan, who was wounded deeply by her isolation in Edoras, the pain of unrequited love and injuries from the battlefield, also undergoes a metaphorical death. Her old self dies in a process of healing of these injures, when she decides to return not to the battlefield, but rather to domestic sphere. While in the tomb as a punishment for burying her brother, she hangs herself. Thus deciding her own fate in how she died. Characters in the story seem to be branching out, and choosing their own fate. Creon defied the rules of the gods, and refused to allow Polyneices to be buried. Antigone defied the kind, and buried Polyneices.

She then attempted starvation but ceased once Octavius threatened retribution against her children, he already gained power of the empire weeks prior and did not need her death to have control. However she died shortly after by a possible lethal injection by poison on a pin or what could also be a venomous snake bite.
