In “Travels With Charley,” Steinbeck travels America with his dog, Charley. As he travels America, he hopes to learn about different cultures and sights that can be found throughout the United States. He also wants to see how other people live in different states. Through his travels, Steinbeck hopes to learn about America to gain the wisdom that a writer would need to properly write about America.

Steinbeck had wanted to discover America ever since he was a kid. Steinbeck felt the need to discover America before he started to write about it, because all he knew about it was what he’d heard and read. “In short, I was writing of something I did not know about, and it seems to me that in a so-called writer, this is criminal,” (Steinbeck 5). This quote shows how Steinbeck felt the need to discover America before he started to write about it. Steinbeck’s pure curiosity led him to want to write about, and discover America. “I had not heard the speech of America, smelled the grass and trees and sewage, seen its hills and water, its color and quality of light,” (Steinbeck 5). This quote shows what he wants to find out about America. These quotes show why Steinbeck wanted to discover America.
