The novel When She Woke by Hillary Jordan is about a 26-year-old girl named Hannah, who is trying to earn her life back so that it is normal, but who really knows what normal is anymore and who gets to say when you reach it. Hannah has committed the crime of murder for abortion, to match the crime she committed her skin has been changed to red. Nevertheless, in Hannah 's society, your punishment is having everyone know what you did considering the colour of your skin represents your crime. Flipping her life around Hannah must fight for everything she wants, including the love of her family, but mostly her mother. Hannah is a red, a murderer, Kayla is another red and one of Hannah 's only friends. The ‘fist ' is a group that beats and kills chrome, well the ‘novemberists ' are the group that help keeps chromes safe and out of harm. In this novel, racism is shown as a problem in society, but not for blacks and whites for all colours. It shows the treatment and segregation of chromes through a person’s action, the ability for an individual to trust and the way people speak to chromes. Racism is given a twist and seen in a different way no less cruel. Segregation is seen in peoples ' actions towards chromes how they treat them.
