Are you a teenager feeling tired from being “bossed around” by parents? What do you think of when you hear about NY or the Empire State Building? (Context) The construction of the Empire State building was important for its time period because it taught the rich to respect people who don’t have as much income as them. In, “When the Empire State Building Was New” by floridateachers.org, it states,” Building the Empire State Building was a dangerous job, performed without hardhats, harnesses, or any of the safety equipment required today. Imagine, walking out on a narrow steel beam, 1000 feet above the street, and then having to work up there all day!” (floridateachers.org). To prove the workers were unfortunate/ poor, in the last sentence, the working conditions were unsatisfactory while occupying a height of 1000 feet in the sky. To a normal person, these conditions may seem harsh, leading them to stay away from jobs mimicking the state of work like the Empire State Building. Despite knowing that conditions were going to be harsh, due to the height of the building, they still took the job anyway, showing how desperate they were for money, likely because they were poor. In turn, the Empire State Building would not have existed without the help of these brave men who were willing to risk their lives to build the property. Based on the text, we can infer, the owner was rich due to the fact that, the building was tall. Tall buildings use up more money to produce, but the owner/coordinator of the building was rich. Consequently, the owner must have seen the hard work the tiresome men were putting in and therefore, respected the workers, despite being poor.
