Throughout Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar, many characters make complex and albeit bad choices at times. But before we can judge their choices, we must analyze their reasons and motivations; whether or not their motivations were noble or not. Someone who has to make the most important decisions and the most complex is Brutus. Throughout the play, he decides to join the conspirators, assassinate Brutus, and after that end his own life. No matter the choice, Brutus has proved time and time again that he has the most honorable and stronger intentions than any other character within the play. V. 23-25). The difference between Cassius and Brutus’s deaths is their methods and reason. Cassius can’t live with the fact that he sent Titinus to his death and the reason that he has to kill himself as a way to atone for his mistakes. Brutus sees his death as almost a fate, and all his choices- well-intentioned or not- lead to that very moment: his death. Brutus believes his death is his responsibility to bear, as a way of showing his commitment to his cause. “Cacer, now be still; I killed not thee with half so good a will,” (V. V. 50-51). Even when he has a way out, a way to live, Brutus believes his death by his hand is the most honorable way out. And he’s right, too. Throughout Julius Caesar, Brutus is one of the few characters who shows his actions are fueled by honor and duty; which is not to say his actions were the best of choices or morally good, just that they had moral intentions. When compared to his foil, Cassius, we can see how honorable Brutus’s actions truly are. Through the cracks of their characters, we can see Cassius’s ego, greed, and cowardice shine through. But when studied closer we can see when Brutus’s honorable qualities shine through, allowing us to see his complexity as a character and over all care for the public and his
