“Do not judge my story by the chapter that you walked in on.” Most people judge each other without knowing each other first and that is not always the solution on judging someone. When you first meet someone, you should be open minded about them and not just assume the worst in them because you got a bad first impression of them. In my opinion, the message behind the novel When You Reach Me written by Rebecca Stead, is Don’t judge someone by how they appear or seem to be. Most characters in the story, sees someone as a totally different person than they actually are but once they get to know each other and their background, they totally change the perspective on that person.
The first time Miranda met Julia was in art class in second grade. Miranda didn’t have the best impression of Julia because she didn’t know that Julia had taken trips all over the world and would often miss school, she saw Julia as a spoiled brat who would get whatever she wanted. On page 34, Miranda didn’t have the best impression of Julia because she was complaining about not having “cafe au lait” “Colored construction paper for her skin” which Miranda thought “Why don’t you just use brown, you idiot?” your skin color is light brown”. Most times Miranda would see someone as a totally different person than they actually are, but it turns out that once she got to know them they were totally different than what she thought. I think that people should be more open minded when they meet someone because they can totally turn out to be a different person from what you thought they would be. You are judging someone by your first impression of them and maybe you didn’t get a good impression of them and that can really change your mindset can be changed once you get to know them
