Every year, billions of pounds of food are wasted throughout the world. This is a big problem because so many people could have prevented it by just starting their meal with less food. People don’t even think about how much food they waste throughout their lives. Food that we throw out results in so many problems and wastes of needed resources. In an article titled, “When You Waste Food, You're Wasting Tons Of Water, Too”, it says, “Tossing out food is clearly a waste of money.” It also states, “According to the World Resources Institute, an environmental think tank, inside the 1.3 billion tons of food wasted every year worldwide is 45 trillion gallons of water.” This may not all talk directly about wasted money, but when you total it up, for 1.3 billion tons of wasted food, that would cost about 205 billion dollars. When you add that to the price of wasted water, that’s more than you want to think about! In an article called, “Tossing out food is clearly a waste of money — and maybe even immoral, according to Pope Francis, who on Wednesday likened food waste to "stealing from the table of those who are poor and hungry."” That same article also says, “We need to do a better job of redistributing food we can't eat, and serving and ordering smaller portions, according to the report.” What this tells you is that when you waste food and total up the amount of food over time, it could have been used to feed those who are poor and hungry and can’t afford food. Also that if the people who buy food or order at a restaurant take smaller portions, then, if they are still hungry they can get more. If people do this, then no food would be wasted because you could get the exact amount of food that you would eat and not waste any.
