Coal is widely known to be a very popular fossil fuel, and is mostly used to make electricity and heat. Like every other fossil fuel, coal is able to cause damage to the environment and us, humans. China uses the most coal globally, the other producers are known as Ukraine, Russia, Vietnam, North Korea, South Africa, the US and Australia. In 2010, the world had burned 670 million tons of coal! Although the real question though, is where does coal come from and how does it form like itself? ~ THE FORMATION ~ There are many formations of coal, four of which are known as peat, lignite, bituminous, and anthracite. The formation starts off with peat, a soft piece of soil that contains plant remains from many years ago. Later on during the cycle, …show more content…

We will talk about the reduce dependence on oil later. The disadvantages of coal is that coal contains CO2, which is known to be the largest contributor of global warming, devastates the environment around local coal mines, emits the most methane, causes impacts on both coal mining and coal miners (health wise), and is overall a nonrenewable …show more content…

Well, do you remember bituminous coal from earlier? Coke can be formed from coal, of course, but is made from destructed distillation of low-ash, and low-sulfur bituminous coal. The material of coke is porous, has a greyish color, and is hard. The real uses of coke is to produce gas, and is used to manufacture water. The good part about coke is that it produces little smoke and are used in oxygen-free furnaces. Let’s get onto how coal can be produced into coal gas, also known as “town gas”. Coal is turned into gas by a process called “Coal Gasification”. Coal Gasification is a process in which to produce a material called “syngas” by using a mixture of methane, hydrogen, carbon dioxide & monoxide, and water vapor. Early technology was used to gasify coal to turn it into a combustible gas which was used for powering lighting and heating before industrial-scale production occurred. In conclusion, coal gasification is now being used for generating electricity such as power plants, chemical feedstocks, and for production of natural gases. The only plant that still produces coal gas can be located in seattle, which uses the most equipment for making coal gas. And finally we come to how coal oil is formed. Coal is formed into oil by also using a process called “Coal Liquefaction”. This process is a high temperature/pressure process in which turns coal into a liquid which contains hydrocarbons, and a liquid
