Where have you been? Where Are you Going? The story “Where are you going? Where have you been?” By Joyce Carol Oats is a story that lacks a lot of family time. The story is based on a girl named Connie that has two sides to her personality. She has a family of a mom, dad, and sister. Connie seems to struggle at home but while she is out she just flaunts around like she has no worries. In this book her mom favors June while also being very outspoken towards Connie, and her dad just seems very lazy and to himself about everything. Throughout the story I noticed Connie and her mother didn’t quite get along. Her mom stated “why don’t you keep your room clean like your sister? How’ve you got your hair fixed? What the hell stinks? Hair spray? You don’t see your sister wearing that junk” (Oates, 860.) But, as a child who Connie is, she doesn’t deserve that negativity from her own family. Neither does any child! Children grow up around their family and that’s who they naturally love. Even though Connie claims that she is pretty just like her mom use to be, she realized that’s why she hates her.
