Why is the mariner compelled to repeat his story?
The Mariner is compelled to repeat his story as he seeks someone, who will forgive his sins. He is forced to tell his story to people he comes across hoping that they have a solution to the tribulations and emotional torture surrounding his life. By repeating the story, the Mariner is able to find an escape route to the dangers bothering his imagination and memory (Boulanger, 2011). The act of repeating his story brings short lived serenity and freedom of mind, but he has to repeat the cycle again because that is what fate requires of him. His woes are as a result of killing an innocent albatross. The act of repeating the story is the price he pays for committing such a senseless crime

The Mariner self-inflicted penance is because he killed an Albatross, which did not have any intention to cause any harm. The Mariner is pained because he realizes the bird was, in fact, a spiritual guide to ensure the crew sails safely to their destination (Meyer, 2012). He does not have any reason as to why he killed the bird, and this only adds to his woes and emotional torture. The Mariner will not wholly succeed in releasing the emotional torture, anguish, and penance because the crime he committed was senseless and no one can forgive his sins.
