“Where the Crawdads Sing” is a coming of age murder mystery novel by Delia Owens. This book tells the story of Kya, a young girl who is abandoned by her family and she learns about life in the North Carolina marshes. In the marsh, she must learn to gather food, cook, navigate the marsh, and live with the feeling of abandonment, all while praying that her mother will return. When a boy named Chase is discovered dead, Kya becomes the primary suspect since they have had a close relationship. This book was a five-star read for me. For Kya, giving a gift is a form of giving a piece of herself and her trust. She fears giving any form of herself to someone because of her fear of abandonment. The rock that the seashell is lying on represents Chase. As you can see, the necklace is at the top of the rock. Chase claimed Kya was always wearing her necklace. The gull flying represents her overcoming the loneliness and finding ways to overcome it. Kya has always had a connection with the gulls. She fed them and took care of them everyday. Even when she went to jail, she had people go and take care of the gulls for her. On her seventeeth birthday, she celebrated her birthday with the gulls to keep her company when her mother failed to be there. Kya has experienced losses that led her to be lonely, like her mother and father. However, when she went to go see the seagulls, they were always there. Kya tried to overcome her loneliness by building relationships with people, learning and spending time with nature. In the middle of the marsh, there are two fireflies pointing in the direction of the boat. The two fireflies represent the two romantic …show more content…

This book touches on the topic of home and isolating yourself because you don’t feel safe from the outside world repeatedly. Kya knows that the outside world can be cruel, but she knows the marsh will always be her home, the place she feels safest. Creative projects like the one-pager are always fun for me because you are not only writing an essay but creating a visual with your symbols. It is a way for me to be more creative and inspire me to actually write the written portion. It is also a fun way to show the reader what was going through your head making the symbols and they also get to see the art that goes along with it. Overall, I truly enjoyed working on this project and hope to be able to do more creative projects in the
